Composer’s Block and Abstract Art | WIP Wednesday

Since last Wednesday, I’ve written a new piece for a call for scores. This piece, a setting of In the Bleak Midwinter for Mezzo-Soprano and Grand Piano, unavoidably took up a lot of time so Triptych took a back seat for most of the week. I have finished composing the first part of the first piece, but I’m still unsure about the ending. Taking a leaf out of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s book, I’m going to keep listening to what I’ve written so far until I hear what should come next. (I’ll talk more about Smith in Friday Favourites. She mentioned this way of composing in an interview on the Meet the Composer podcast.)

This week I’ve also spent some time researching the abstract painter Agnes Martin. Anyone who’s familiar with my open-work scores might see where this is heading…
