Improvisation #1

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had relaxing holidays and have settled into 2019.

New year, new project. This year, I’ll listen to a different composer/ensemble a week. At the end of the week, I will post the works I’ve heard here so anybody looking to discover new music can follow along. (And if anyone’s got any suggestions for me, please let me know in the comments!)

This week I listened to Meredith Monk.

  • Songs from the Hill
  • Tablet
  • Impermanence
  • Volcano Songs
  • New York Requiem

An interesting effect of this has been how my improvisations have changed depending on the composer. So I will also be posting an improvisation each week. The aim is not to imitate the music I’ve been listening to (in fact, I deliberately used violin instead of voice for this one), just to observe the effect it has had.

All the improvisations will be posted unedited (I’m busy with time is different here… so there’s no time for extra editing!) You can listen to the first one below.
